2012, Émilie Simon – “Bel amour” (with an exercise)

Émilie Simon (1978-) is a French singer and composer of electronic music.
Since 2003, she has released no less than five albums. “Bel amour” appears on Franky Knight, 2011, which was written and recorded in the wake of her boyfriend’s tragic swine flu-related death. Most tracks of this album (and “Bel amour” among them) serve as the soundtrack of La Délicatesse, a beautiful tale based on the relationship between a widow (Audrey Tautou) and her Swedish co-worker (François Damiens).

A good example of the use of the conditional mood.
Exercise: fill the gaps with verbs conjugated in the imparfait tense and the conditional mood.

Lyrics (Paroles)

Si je ……………bâtir,
Un soleil, un empire
Pour toi,
Sans hésiter
Cent mille fois,
Je le ……………

Si je ……………tout changer
Et si je ……………braver
La mort, j’…………… te chercher
Plus jamais je ne te ……………

Si les lumières du matin ……………ramener tes mains, ton corps et ta chaleur,
Mon amour
Non, je n’…………… plus peur

Quand je ferme les paupières
J’entends ta voix et j’espère
Pouvoir enfin, retrouver
Mon bel amour pour l’éternité

English translation of the song

If I could build
A sun, an empire
For you
Without hesitation
A hundred thousand times
I would do it

If I could change everything
And if I could defy
Death, I would go looking for you
Never again would I leave you

If the morning lights could bring back your hands, your body and your heat
My love
No, I would no longer be afraid

When I close my eyelids
I hear your voice and I hope
To finally be able to meet again with
My beautiful love for ever and ever
